In one of the firsts, quick commerce platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, etc. may soon start delivering low-alcohol content alcoholic drinks such as beer, wine, and liqueurs. According to an Economic Times report, New Delhi, Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Kerala are considering starting test projects for this initiative. Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, etc. executives revealed that Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) authorities are assessing the advantages & disadvantages of allowing alcohol home deliveries. According to the reports, Swiggy & Zomato launched online alcohol delivery in non-metro cities in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown after their core business of restaurant food delivery had been majorly impacted by the pandemic. They both started alcohol delivery in Ranchi, Jharkhand and later in Odisha, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Assam after getting all the necessary permissions. The alcohol home delivery during the lockdown was a big success despite restrictions but was stopped in most of the states after the pandemic and lockdown was over. Currently, alcohol home delivery is allowed only in Odisha and West Bengal. Several industry reports claim that online alcohol home delivery has resulted in a 20-30% increase in sales in West Bengal and Odisha. Swiggy’s Vice-President of Corporate Affairs, Dinker Vashisht highlighted the benefits of online alcohol home delivery and said it ensures end-to-end transaction records and age Verification. It also follows regulatory rules, excise rules, timings, dry days, and zonal delivery rules.
