UP: 3 Die After Google Maps Leads Their Car to an Unfinished Bridge
3 men died in UP after their car plunged into the Ramganga River from an under-construction bridge, allegedly due to outdated GPS directions and lack of safety measures.
In a shocking incident, three people lost their lives in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, after their car plunged into the Ramganga River from an under-construction bridge. The tragedy took place on the night of 23rd November 2024.
The victims, identified as two brothers, Vivek and Amit, along with their friend Kaushal, were travelling by car from Gurugram to Bareilly to attend a wedding. Like many others, they were using Google Maps to navigate their route.
However, when they reached Bareilly late at night, Google Maps led them to an under-construction bridge over the shallow Ramganga River. The bridge, which was incomplete due to recent flood damage, was not updated on the GPS system. As a result, the car, unaware of the danger, drove onto the unfinished bridge and fell from a height of around 50 feet into the river.
The locals discovered the car and the three bodies the next morning. They immediately informed the police, who rushed to the scene and used boats to retrieve the bodies. The bodies were sent for post-mortem.
A police officer from Bareilly said, "We saw a Wagon R, which was possibly hired as a taxi, in the river. It appears that the car drove onto the incomplete bridge and fell into the river. The identities of two victims, Amit and Vivek, were confirmed. We are still working on identifying the third person."
Ashutosh Shivam, a senior administrative officer in charge of infrastructure, explained that earlier this year, floods had caused the front portion of the bridge to collapse. Unfortunately, this change was not updated on Google Maps, leading to the confusion. As a result, the driver was misled and did not realize the bridge was unsafe.
The families of the victims have raised serious concerns about the authorities responsible for the bridge’s construction. They have questioned why the bridge was left unfinished, why there were no warning signs for drivers, and why no barricades were placed at the edge of the incomplete bridge.
The families have announced that they will soon file an FIR (First Information Report) against the construction authorities for negligence.
The tragic incident has left the local community in shock, and people are demanding accountability from the authorities to prevent such accidents in the future.
