Farmers Gherao Karnal Secretariat in Haryana
Thousands of farmers held a mega march and gathered at the district headquarters in Haryana's Karnal after talks with the BJP-led state government failed.
Farmer unions had demanded action against officials over the lathi-charge against protesters on August 28 in Karnal, Haryana and demanded punishment for IAS officer Ayush Sinha as he had told police officers to crack the heads of the farmers. Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait said if their demands were not met they would, otherwise, lay siege to the Karnal mini-secretariat. A delegation of 11 farm leaders was invited by the BJP state government for talks. However, since the talks failed, on the evening of 8 September 2021, thousands of farmers from Haryana and neighbouring states reached a place called the New Anaj Mandi by riding tractors and motorcycles. From there they marched on foot to the Karnal mini-secretariat which was five kilometres away. Farmers faced a water cannon on the way. The protesting farmers jumped some barricades as well but there was no other serious confrontation with police along the way. They successfully reached the HQ and surrounded the building. All farmers have set up tents around the building. When the leader was asked how long farmers will stay there he said they have all prepared to stay there for a very long time till their demands are met.
